Saudia (SV) airlines was established on September 1946, when King Abdul Aziz Ibn Saud was gifted Douglas DC-3 by the president of US, Franklin D, Roosevelt. SV is owned by the kingdom of Saudia Arabia with it’s headquartering in Jeddah. Later in 1962, Saudian Arabian airlines became the second airline in the Middle East that operates jet. SV became the founding member of Arab Air Carrriers Organization (AACO) on 25th August, 1965.
Saudi Minister of Defense and Aviation signed the contract for the privatization of Saudi Arabian Airlines.
SV won the second position for on time performance of flights of 90.46% and later in December 2013, it also received the soaring rate in passenger transportation having 25.24 million passengers. In 2017, SV won the “World’s Most Improved Airline Award.”
It is the first airline to launch free whatsapp service for all domestic as well as for International flights.
The first domestic operation of the airline was started on March 1947. This covered the kingdom and destinations such as Damascus and Cairo. After three years, new Middle Eastern destinations were added that includes- Amman, Karachi, Beirut, Port Sudan, or Istanbul.
New routes began to be included to the network of SV that comprises of Europe cities- Geneva, Frankfurt and London by incorporating DC-6s and Boeing 707s in 1970. Currently, SV is operating not only on domestic but across more than 80 destinations globally- India, Egypt, Netherlands, Spain, Turkey, Bangladesh, Qatar, Indonesia, Vietnam, Uk and Japan i.e, covering almost 4 continents- Asia, North America, Africa, and Europe.
Flights from Riyadh to Madrid with layover in Jeddah and then to Toronto was launched using A320 in December 2013. Apart from this, in 2014 various flights began to cover the route of USA.
In April 2022, services began to Seoul, Beijing, Mykonos, Barcelona, Malaga, Bangkok, Chicago, Moscow, Entebbe and Kyiv along with Zurich, Tunis and Kuala Lampur.
In December 2010, SV signed the codeshare agreement with Air France. A year later, an agreement was done with SkyTeam global Alliance so that it could fly to Guangzhou, with three flights. SV also has its codeshare agreement with Oman Air, Royal Air Marco Airlines, Korean Air, KLM, Malaysia Airlines, Vietnam Airlines, Kenya Airways, Aeroflot, Air France, Czech Airlines, Ethiad Airways, Garuda Indonesia, Gulf Air, ITA Airways, Malaysia Airlines and Middle East Airlines.
The average fleet age of the airline is almost 8.2 years. SV has 151 aircrafts including passangers and cargo fleet. SV operates one of the largest fleets in the Middle East. It is now focusing more on the comfort of passenger’s requirements.
